VIBSIST-1000

MAJOR BENEFITS

-Exceptional reflection and refraction seismic source
-Excellent shear waves source
-Increased productivity
-High-resolution data
-Modular and portable

ADDITIONAL BENEFITS

-Integrated with VSP surveys
-Environmentally friendly
-Mechanically reliable
-Compatible with most seismographs
-Surface wave capability

The VIBSIST is a multi-impact, time-distributed source that uses a tractor / excavator mounted hydraulic rock breaker, powered through a computer controlled flow regulator.

APPLICATIONS

- Oil and gas exploration
- Multi-offset, multi-azimuth VSP
- Location of fracture zones
- Static corrections surveys
- Mineral exploration
- Hydrogeological studies
- Hazardous waste investigations
- Research and education

The seismic signals are produced as a series of pulses, according to a specific preprogrammed sequence.

The use of a monotonous variation of the impact rate controls effectively the nonrepeatability of the impact intervals and achieves a wide bandwidth even when coupling to the ground is relatively poor.

Using standard equipment allows the VIBSIST-1000 to be a safe, non-destructive and environmentally friendly highresolution seismic source. It also makes it reliable and highly cost effective.

VIBSIST-1000 can be installed on a range of vehicles, such as Bobcat, wheeled tractors and Caterpillar excavators equipped with a hydraulic station providing an oil flow of 20-70 l/min at 100-170 bar.
EXCEPTIONAL REFLECTION AND REFRACTION SOURCE

In a comparison surface reflection test done at Ketzin, Germany, for the CO2SINK project, three sources (a weight drop, a mini-vibrator and a VIBSIST-1000) display dominant frequencies of 40—80 Hz depending on the near surface conditions. The VIBSIST produces the widest spectrum, comparable energy with the weight drop at the low end and similar to or higher than the mini-vibrator at the high end.

Raw data for all sources have a good signal-to-noise ratio. VIBSIST shows a set of more resolved individual reflectors at target depth (0.5-0.6s).

For all sources, stacked sections look similar down to approximately 1s. VIBSIST has the greatest penetration. It may image target horizons in problematic areas where the other two sources do not penetrate deep enough. Provides information on the deeper reservoir.

HIGH PRODUCTIVITY, MODULARITY & PORTABILITY

Significant productivity gains are obtained because the VIBSIST-1000 is not dependent on the lengthy preparation needed to use explosives, such as drilling shot-holes, filling them in, setting up the wires, etc. For medium and deep range investigations, the VIBSIST technique is at least 5 to 10 times faster than using explosives, depending on the operator. With the VIBSIST-1000, one can finish the job quite sooner than with alternative methods.

The wide variety of suitable carrier vehicles makes the VIBSIST-1000 portable and highly mobile. It allows jobs to be done faster and in difficult field conditions that would otherwise have been almost inaccessible.

HIGH DATA QUALITY, ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY

VIBSIST-1000 produces high frequency content (up to 500 Hz) while achieving significant depth penetration (more than 2000 m). The investigation range can be increased with little or no expense of resolution if the signal energy is built over time, rather than being emitted as a short high-power burst.

V I B S I S T - 1 0 0 0 i s a n environmentally friendly seismic source. It is a non-destructive alternative that does not create environmental pollution such as chemicals, sound, etc. Legal risks frequently associated with using explosives are eliminated.

SYSTEM COMPONENTS

SYSTEM MODULES

1. The controller transfers to the impact hammer the sweep control sequence provided by the computer
2. Construction, mining or forestry equipment are modified to operate in accordance with the sweep control sequence, through a hydraulic servo controller
3. The ground impact assembly includes an impact rod and a pressure plate.
4. A variety of seismographs can be used, they include all DMT Summit series and Geometrics’ Geode, StrataVisor and StrataView.
5. With non-Windows seismographs, a laptop is required but not provided with the VIBSIST-1000.

SOFTWARE

Four software modules are included as part of the VIBSIST-1000 system, they are:
- Controller, used to program the sweep control sequence
- Sweep Decoder, correlates the sweeps. This module can either be used for fast On-Line monitoring or elaborate Off Line processing
- Signal Conditioning, includes a collection of filtering programs used for processing of the records before or after correlation
- Signal Display Interface, allows the operator to visualize the data conveniently
