Crosshole Reflection Imaging

The S-wave reflection image and the S-wave velocity tomogram are dominated by the NNW striking fracture set, in the upper left corner of the section, in good agreement with the fractures mapped at the site.

The main structures mapped in the tunnels are marked with solid lines.

Reflection imaging investigations were also conducted before and after the excavation of the tunnels

S-wave velocity tomograms and reflection imaging results before (left) and after (right) excavating a tunnel at the bottom of the section. (Äspö, ZEDEX Project)

The S-wave velocity tomograms show very little difference before and after excavation. The crosshole reflection imaging sections before and after excavation differ significantly. The tunnel appears as a very strong event at the bottom of the section measured after excavation. Other new features can also be seen.
